Hamamatsu, Japan, March 7, 2017 – Roland DG Corporation, a leading manufacturer of wide-format inkjet printers, printer/cutters and vinyl cutters worldwide, today announced the launch of the GR-640/540/420 professional vinyl cutters, the latest additions to its CAMM-1 series.
According to Yohei Shinomura, product manager of Roland DG’s digital printing business, the GR series has been completely redesigned from the ground up to deliver best-in-class cutting quality and productivity due to increased accuracy, speed, media versatility and additional state-of-the-art cutting features. The new ergonomic L-shaped design of the integrated stand and machine provides the stability required to ensure precision cutting even at high speed. The redesigned cutting carriage, blade holder and other core mechanisms enable the machines to achieve a maximum cutting speed of 1,485 mm/s and up to 600 gf of downforce for cutting through dense media with a single pass. Models are available in 64”, 54” and 42” cutting widths to allow users to pair them with the inkjet printers they are currently using.
Shinomura said, “The cutting industry has become increasingly diverse. In addition to sign making, cutting now includes the production of window and vehicle graphics, window tinting and car protection film for automotive restyling, personalized apparel, labels and decals, packaging prototypes, paint/sandblast stencils and more. The breadth of applications demands the ability to handle a wide range of materials of varying thicknesses, such as window films, high intensity reflective materials, heat transfer materials including flock and glitter, cardboard, and sandblast mask.”
To meet the variety of applications and materials required by today’s cutting industry, the GR series is equipped with electronic pinch rollers that can adjust the pressure to 10 pre-set levels at the touch of a button for smooth feeding of any media thickness. The overlap cutting function allows for up to ten times overlap cutting for difficult-to-cut substrates. The tangential emulation function delivers precise corner cutting quality for cutting sharp letters in thick materials.
A host of innovations make the GR series extremely easy to use. The cutters are capable of reading crop marks on pre-printed data to accurately align graphics. The bundled Roland CutStudio features a perforating cutting function that is convenient for making pop-out stickers and decals, and a cut-by-color function that is useful when outputting designs with multiple colored sheets. A new function automatically creates weed lines for more efficient weeding after designs have been cut. Hamamatsu, Japan, March 1, 2017 – Roland DG Corporation, a leading provider of dental milling devices worldwide, announced today the release of its first dental 3D printer, the DWP-80S, to assist in the production of dentures. Launched simultaneously, the DWX-52DC is the newest addition to the company’s DWX series dental mills and incorporates several new automated functions for the unattended production of precision dental restorations. With the announcement, Roland DG now offers the dental industry both additive (3D printing) and subtractive (milling) manufacturing processes to improve the workflow of dental technicians. The products also represent the first to be released from Roland DG’s recently announced DGSHAPE business brand.
To shorten production timeframes and lower costs while maintaining the quality and consistency of dental restorations, an increasing number of dental laboratories are installing digital systems consisting of CAD/CAM software, digital scanners and milling machines to replace conventional casting methods. Since its launch in 2010, Roland DG’s DWX series dental mills have gained industry recognition for their desktop size, user-friendliness, robust reliability and open architecture, which has contributed to the widespread digitalization of dental restoration such as crowns and bridges. The DWX-52DC adds exciting new features to further automate and expand the formerly labor-intensive process.
According to Kohei Tanabe, Roland DG’s general manager of medical market development, denture production is still mostly carried out manually and requires an advanced level of skill. “Dental labs are seeking a more efficient, flexible digital solution to expedite the production of denture applications to accommodate the increasing demand from patients and clinics,” he said. To meet those demands, Roland DG developed the DWP-80S 3D printer to streamline the denture fabrication process.
The DWP-80S uses a proprietary projector lens to cure resin materials with UV-LED light. Bundled with the DWP-80S, new Quick Denta software provides a remarkably simple solution for the 3D printing of custom trays, base plates and frameworks. Using the easy-to-follow workflow wizard with pre-configured parameters, applications required for dentures can be printed in three simple steps eliminating the need for time-consuming learning or editing time. The DWP-80S analyzes the precision and fit required to choose the ideal number and layout of support points while adjusting for material shrinkage factors. The 80 mm square work area is ideal for simultaneous printing of multiple units*.
With a newly developed automatic disc changer (ADC) capable of storing up to six discs, the DWX-52DC is fully equipped to mill a variety of precision dental restorations overnight to increase lab productivity. The included pin-type material adapter enables setting up and milling seven pin-type blocks consecutively. With the DWX-52DC’s expanded production capacity, a variety of dental restorations, including copings, crowns, full bridges, abutments, surgical guides and models can be produced. The 15-station automatic tool changer (ATC) automatically replaces milling burs without interruption enabling efficient milling of a wide range of materials, including zirconia, wax, PMMA, composite resin, PEEK, gypsum, CoCr sinter metal and fiber-reinforced resin.
The DWX-52DC is capable of simultaneous 5-axis machining which supports complex restorations with undercuts. Rather than being locked into one manufacturer, open architecture allows users to integrate the unit into their existing workflow with popular scanners, software and the latest materials. For continuous, reliable production, an air pressure system automatically changes the volume of air for the type of material being milled. The Virtual Machine Panel (VPanel) allows users to quickly configure settings for up to four machines from a single computer for high-volume production.

Hamamatsu, Japan, January 10, 2017 – Roland DG Corporation, a leading manufacturer of wide-format inkjet printers worldwide, today announced the addition of the VersaUV LEF-200 to its lineup of benchtop UV-LED flatbed inkjet printers.
According to Hirotoshi Naruse, product manager of Roland DG’s digital printing business, the LEF-200 was developed to offer outstanding print quality, greater media compatibility, and ease of use for the personalization and custom printing markets, which are characterized by small-lot production of numerous products. At 20 inches wide, the LEF-200 prints high-quality full-color, white, clear and primer inks on a wide variety of materials including three-dimensional items up to 100 mm thick. To accommodate an expanded range of profitable applications, the LEF-200 features a new on-board primer ink option for priming objects quickly and conveniently. The new Roland VersaWorks Dual RIP software simplifies the process of producing graphics with special effects.
“With the LEF-200,” Naruse said, “you can print rich color directly onto a wide range of personalized consumer products and promotional items such as smartphone cases, pens, awards, giftware, plates and more.” The new primer ink option allows users to prep an object for customization before printing a full-color graphic. “This makes adding graphics to glass, plastics and other challenging media* so much more clean and efficient,” he said. The LEF-200 incorporates Roland DG’s proprietary CMYK, white and clear ECO-UV inks for premium quality printing. Clear ink can be printed for spot gloss or matte finishes, as well as unique embossing effects. White ink can be printed as a spot color or as a flood behind CMYK on dark backgrounds or clear materials. To meet individual business requirements, users can choose from three ink configurations: CMYK+White+Primer, CMYK+White+Clear, and CMYK+White+White.
“We also added usability enhancements to the LEF-200 for greater efficiency.” Naruse added. Roland VersaWorks Dual enables users to work not only with PostScript® files, but also allows for native processing of PDF files to ensure transparency effects are processed accurately. In addition, white or clear ink data can be generated easily in the RIP, ideal for use in producing transparent personalized accessories with special effects. The position and size of special color data can also be adjusted in the RIP for perfect registration. Features like rotation and mirroring of the data can be configured in the RIP as well, without the need to return to your graphic design software. The newly available Maintained Clipped Position function is included which enables you to print designated images only. Since launching the world's first desktop mill in 1986, Roland DG has focused on producing 3D milling machines that are compact, easy-to-use and affordable. The MDX series has proven popular among engineers, product designers and educators for their ability to quickly and easily produce precision prototypes, parts, jigs and models from a wide variety of resins and woods such as ABS, POM, nylon, plastic foam, modeling wax, chemical wood, hardwood and more.
The newly announced MDX-50 provides a number of exciting enhancements over the MDX-40A mill. Offered as a complete system, it includes easy-to-use CAM software and features a larger workspace and automatic tool changer (ATC) as well as faster milling speed. With the increasing number of students and individuals undertaking fabrication for the first time, the MDX-50 has been designed to be both easier and safer to use. The integrated control panel of the benchtop MDX-540, a high-end model of Roland DG's 3D milling machine, has been added to the front panel of the MDX-50, allowing spindle rotation and milling speed to be controlled while monitoring machining conditions. The on-screen computer operation "VPanel" provides machine monitoring capability, sends emails when machining work is complete or if intervention is required, and records tool usage time and replacement intervals, all of which helps to manage workflow. The SRP Player CAM software bundled with the MODELA series is included. Machining conditions can be configured easily in five simple and intuitive steps, making production simple, even for first-time users. The new certification program is effective as of June 2016*1.
Roland DG operates a program of certifying highly skilled and knowledgeable SEs as Roland DG Care Certified Service Engineers* in order to provide high-quality, standardized maintenance services that meet the demands of customers around the world. Until now, certification had been based on the results of internal testing and completion of training courses. The new program places a greater focus on the quality of the SE's daily activities and their professionalism, and features a point-based evaluation scale to ensure more objective certifications. The new system, a cloud-based customer relationship management application, is used to collect data such as customer satisfaction regarding maintenance work and resolution time for addressing customer issues*2, and converts the results into points. These points are combined with the points accrued from training history and results of Roland DG Academy Online for service engineers, an online learning platform for SEs that was launched prior to the release of the new certification program. SEs who achieve the required total points are then certified as Roland DG Care Certified Service Engineers. The acquired points are also used to select participants for the Global SE Awards**, a worldwide competition for Roland DG SEs.
Takaaki Koshita, general manager of Roland DG technical services, explained the background leading up to the new certification program. "The new certification program allows us to better manage repair and maintenance levels that are directly related to greater customer satisfaction and helps our SEs become more aware of where they need to grow in order to continue providing an exceptional level of service. Hamamatsu, Japan, June 17, 2016 – Roland DG Corporation, a leading manufacturer of desktop fabrication devices worldwide, today announced the start of a joint research relationship with GPI, the Graduate School for the Creation of New Photonics Industries located in Hamamatsu. The collaboration will study the application of femtosecond laser technology to the fields of 3D fabrication and healthcare where Roland DG is currently exploring various options to expand its business.
A femtosecond laser is an ultrashort pulse of intense light which is concentrated at a femtosecond (one quadrillionth of a second). Peak power is generated by compressing and oscillating the pulse length of a laser to a few femtoseconds. Melting or thermal damage to the irradiated area and its surroundings are reduced due to the laser's ablation effect* making femtosecond lasers highly effective when fabricating with extremely hard materials with exceptional accuracy, or when trying not to damage nearby tissues during an operation such as used in Lasik eye surgery. Currently, practical applications of the femtosecond laser have expanded into fabrication with industrial metals and carbon fibers, keratorefractive surgery and cataract treatment, and research and development in biotechnology. Challenges remain, however, including downsizing and cost reduction of the oscillator, which is required to create a femtosecond laser, and conducting further research on how materials change during fabrication.

According to the InfoTrends 2015 Quarterly Wide-Format Tracking Shipping report, Roland DG shipped more units than any other manufacturer in the 30-inch and up category. The study suggests price point and technology type are key factors driving global demand for Roland DG products and enabling the company to achieve this level of continued leadership.
The InfoTrends product tracker is considered a reliable source of sales information. "Our data shows that Roland DG is the leading seller of wide-format durable graphics printers in 2015, as they have been for many years prior," noted Steve Urmano, InfoTrends analyst for the wide-format printing market.
The InfoTrends report covers all four reporting quarters in 2015 and takes into consideration all wide-format inkjets 30-inches wide and larger, priced under $50,000 USD, including solvent and latex ink technologies considered to be the largest segments of the wide-format digital printing market.

The report by InfoTrends follows Roland DG's recent introduction of several new wide-format models: TrueVIS VG series printer/cutters which introduce new core technology and innovative features to Roland DG's leading eco-solvent technology; the SOLJET EJ-640, an eco-solvent printer that combines outstanding print speed and image quality with low running costs; the Texart XT-640, a dye-sublimation printer designed for high-volume production; and the VersaUV LEF-300 UV-LED, the largest addition to Roland DG's LEF series of benchtop UV flatbed printers.

Hamamatsu, Japan, March 8, 2016 – Roland DG Corporation, a leading manufacturer of wide-format inkjet printers and printer/cutters worldwide, today announced the launch of the TrueVIS VG-640/540 64" and 54" printer/cutters, a new generation of advanced wide-format, eco-solvent inkjet printer/cutters to be released under the TrueVIS brand name.
According to Yuko Maeda, division president of Roland DG business development unit, the TrueVIS brand expands Roland DG's technical capabilities in ink formulation, print head design, precision control, and firmware engineering, resulting in far greater flexibility for Roland DG customers moving forward. "We will now be able to match the most appropriate head technology to each application and market that we serve, delivering the best available solutions to all of our users," said Maeda.
The VG series represents Roland DG's most advanced printer/cutters ever. TrueVIS VG series printer/cutters are equipped with four newly developed Roland DG FlexFire print heads which more flexibly control the metallic plate attached to the ink chamber, for a higher firing frequency. The FlexFire print heads also deliver precision droplet placement in three sizes, and an approx. 25% wider print swath compared to previous Roland DG models. Maeda said, "The combination of the new FlexFire head and new TrueVIS INK – engineered specifically for the print heads – delivers stunning fine details and vibrant colors at a production speed of 10.6m2 per hour in High Quality mode on vinyl and up to 34.8m2 per hour on banner in dual CMYK ink configuration*1."
The VG-640/540 also offers seven-color (CMYK plus Light Cyan, Light Magenta and Light Black) or eight-color (CMYKLcLmLk plus White*2) ink configurations. White ink provides excellent opacity for transparent window graphics while Light Cyan, Light Magenta and Light Black offer smooth gradations, perfect skin tones and beautiful images.
The VG-640/540 uses new TrueVIS INK which comes in cost-effective 500cc pouches that fit neatly into reusable cartridges that slide into a hidden ink bay for clean operation with less waste. In dual CMYK configuration, up to one liter of ink can be loaded for each color, ideal for high-volume, unattended production.
New Roland VersaWorks Dual RIP software – included with the VG – features a new core engine that accurately interprets native PDFs as well as legacy PostScript files, including files with transparencies. The precision cutting mechanism of the VG-640/540 is adopted from Roland DG's latest cutting advancements, facilitating reliable contour cutting of complex designs, and expanding the range of possible applications such as cutting thick materials for laminated floor signs.
The VG-640 and 540 are also designed to be easier to use than other similar devices. The newly developed Roland DG Mobile Panel allows users to perform control panel functions with their existing smartphones or tablets with iOS or Android operating systems, utilizing a Bluetooth connection. This innovative new feature provides a rich interface either directly on, or remotely in range of the VG, enabling operators to receive machine status updates as well as make adjustments and conduct test printing and cleaning functions from their mobile device. In addition, newly featured LED lights boost visibility inside the printer, making it easier to check printing status and perform maintenance work, as well as providing color-coded operation updates.
Finally, Maeda said that the TrueVIS marks a new level of reliability and economy. "The optimized printing technology enables the VG to produce vibrant color with low ink consumption and minimal electricity in comparison with alternative ink technologies. This results in a total savings of tens of thousands of dollars over the life of the product."

Hamamatsu, Japan, February 12, 2016 – Roland DG Corporation today announced that long-time Representative Director, Chairman and President Masahiro Tomioka will step down from the position of President, and Hidenori Fujioka, Director and Executive Vice President of the company, will assume that role. Tomioka will continue as Representative Director, Chairman of the company.
The change is subject to the resolution at the Ordinary General Meeting of Shareholders for the 35th Business Term and the following Board of Directors' meeting, both to be held on March 24, 2016.
During his thirty-year tenure as President, Tomioka spearheaded the transformation of Roland DG from a manufacturer of pen plotters to 3D desktop fabrication tools, vinyl cutters and wide-format inkjet printers while achieving worldwide sales leadership with high profitability. To ensure future sales growth, he recently tapped into the company's inkjet and 3D technologies to expand into the on-demand digital printing and health care industries. He was also responsible for promoting the company's innovative GlobalOne plan, which unified R&D with sales and marketing as one group and leveraged the company's talent globally to respond faster to market changes.

According to Yuko Maeda, division president of Roland DG business development unit, VersaUV printers, which include the previous LEF-12 and LEF-20 models, are popular for their ability to print rich color directly on a vast array of materials, including three-dimensional items up to 100 mm thick. The LEF-300 was developed in response to customer demand for greater productivity in the personalization and custom printing markets, which are characterized by small-lot production of numerous products. To accommodate greater quantities and larger-sized items, the LEF-300's printing area has been expanded to 770 mm wide by 330 mm long, 50% more than the previous models.
"With the LEF-300," Maeda said, "you can print on a wide variety of substrates such as PET, ABS, and polycarbonate, and soft materials such as TPU and leather, as well as three-dimensional items, including pens, smartphone cases, signs, personalized awards, giftware, promotional items, laptop covers and more. A vacuum table makes it easy to hold thin and soft materials in place," she added.
With four print heads and two UV-LED lamps, the LEF-300 enables bidirectional printing approximately 60%* faster than the LEF-20. The number of white and clear (gloss) ink nozzles have been doubled for faster printing, increased density and opacity and faster build-up of multiple layers for three-dimensional textures. A new draft print mode improves overall efficiency for users in need of quick prototype prints.
The LEF-300 comes equipped with the new Roland VersaWorks Dual software RIP that includes all the advanced, easy-to-use features of VersaWorks, and now supports both PostScript and PDF files for improved file processing and automatic creation of white and clear ink layers. In addition, features like offset, positioning, rotation and registration of ink layers can be handled directly in the RIP without the need to return to design software.
The LEF-300 uses new EUV4 ink, Roland DG's proprietary CYMK, White and Clear ECO-UV inks for premium quality prints. EUV4 ink reduces odor and the shrinking of thin film materials like BOPP and PET when curing. In addition to a 220 cc cartridge, a new, larger 500 cc ink cartridge has been introduced which is more economical and requires less cartridge replacements. (White ink is only available in 220 cc cartridges.)
According to Maeda, "The growth of digital technology has facilitated the printing of photographs, illustrations and logos onto items that people wear or carry, both as a means of self-expression and as a means of feeling closer to the things they value. The market for on-demand printing onto various articles is expected to expand further still in the future."
"We have seen an increasing number of businesses using VersaUV LEF printers to provide custom printing services for smartphone cases and accessories," Maeda said, "including ecommerce sites as well as kiosks located within shopping centers, where they provide on-site printing of photographs taken by customers onto various blank goods to create a new shopping experience for their customers. The LEF-300 is perfect for handling the growing amount of tasks."
Maeda also sees potential in the application of UV printers used in mass production. "In order to accommodate customization and decoration of parts and modules in high volume production lines, the LEF-300 incorporates an input/output system that supports external devices such as warning lights and custom production automation systems. In addition, the LEF-300 is built with precision parts that are not susceptible to changes in temperature or humidity and are designed to maintain accurate high-quality printing even during long production runs."
